Fashion Passion
The Girls Group of Rushey Mead finally got to put their acting chops to the test and show off their innovative designs when they performed their Fashion Passion event.
The girls mesmerised their audience with skirts made from an old pair of jeans, old Indian clothes and one girl even made a dress from the lining of her dad’s raincoat!
The room was filled with music, energy and just plain positive vibes which the audience could notice too. Many audience members were impressed with the level of motivation the girls showed in raising awareness for the cause. Others were inspired to take their mum’s old clothes and make something new....Let’s hope they got their mum’s permission first!
The best thing to come out of the event was that young people who were now more aware were opening the minds of their peers to the message of ethical fashion. The event demonstrated how we can wear clothes in a way that would save us some money, be creative and even save a life. The story of Roopa which the girls enacted was especially shocking with one attendee proclaiming “I didn’t know people died for our clothes” and in the future she would “look for the fair-trade sign.”
Somebody asked if the girl’s new found power to rise against trends will last. She said “the peer pressure is so much that I wonder if these girls will continue to recycle their clothes. Most young people want something with a label and the temptation may be too high.”
Which is true, the temptation is strong but it is important to remember to not judge one another if you do buy something from an unethical brand. As long as you don’t ALWAYS shop there and try to hold on to it for a substantial amount of time and then even recycle it. Every little bit counts and you would be doing your bit for the workers and the environment.
If you’re interested in participating in one of our workshops and putting on a similar show email us at Naitika@affp.org.uk. And we can show you how to cut up your parents old clothes!

i think the show was a real success and i know that i will start visiting more charity shops and fairtrade shops in the future. I had a really good time and it was amazing to work with Priesh, Sheetal, Shane, Mona, Babita and the rest of the girls. I hope our influences had a positive impact.
