A sari goes a long way

Ecouterre recently reported on women in India using their saris to filter water and protect against cholera.

We all know saris are long, bright, colourful pieces of cloth that extend up to 10 meters in length. What we didn’t know was that the same sari can save lives!

Cholera is a severe bacterial infection that can affect humans through contaminated water and food. The symptoms of Cholera include vomiting, diarrhea and can lead to death!

Folding the sari eight times over makes it better at catching dirt and disease that exist in pond water. A study found that over a 5 year period the cases of cholera were reduced by 25%.

Now that’s resourceful!
